Driving Directions Lesotho

LESOTHO is a small, landlocked kingdom surrounded by the Republic of South Africa. Snow-capped mountains and treeless uplands, cut by spectacular gorges, cover two-thirds of the “mountain kingdom.”

Driving Directions

The climate is pleasant with variable rainfall. Winters are generally dry with heavy frosts in lowland areas and frequent snow in the mountains. Due to the mountainous terrain, only one-eighth of the land is cultivated, and the main crop is maize. Yields are low because of soil erosion on the steep slopes and overgrazing by sheep and cattle herds.

Wool and mohair exported, but most of the country’s foreign exchange comes from money sent home by Lesotho workers in South Africa.

Tourism is beginning to flourish, with skiing and pony trails on hardy Lesotho ponies in the mountains, two of the main attractions.

Located on the Drakensburg Escarpment, which forms its eastern border with KwaZulu province in South Africa, Lesotho is mostly mountainous. Even its “lowlands,” a strip of land lying lengthwise along its northeast-southwest border, have an average elevation of 1,524 to 1,829 meters (5,000 to 6,000 feet). Occupying roughly a quarter of the country, they extend eastward to the Cave Sandstone Foothills. These foothills form a narrow band bordering the eastern highlands. Lesotho is landlocked.
